About the congress:
50 indigenous politicians and parliamentarians from Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland are invited to discuss and share views and experiences regarding the role and influence of indigenous peoples in the Barents Euro-Arctic Council. The aim of the Congress is to create a new mandate for the indigenous peoples’ representation in the BEAC and to form a political statement.
Expenses for participants representing indigenous peoples’ organizations in Russia are covered, in order to secure a broad participation from Russia.
The Congress will take place in Kirkenes on February 4th 2010, and the program will be coordinated with the annual festival Barents Spektakel 2010 and the conference “Co-existence in the Arctic” (February 5th), focusing on indigenous peoples’ livelihood in the age of the extractive industries.
The Norwegian Barents Secretariat is the technical organizer, and questions can be routed to Christina@barents.no
