Indigenous Peoples, Business and Environment 2012

The inhabitants of the North face severe consequences from industrial and military activities in their areas of livelihood. Indigenous peoples depending on land use are threatened by waste and pollution. Who are responsible for cleaning up? How can we prevent environmental damage? Are we able to join forces to secure a safe environment for future generations? What about the companies’ obligations?

The conference takes place in Thon Hotel Kirkenes, Norway on 9 February 2012. The Working Group of Indigenous Peoples in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region (WGIP) is the host of this conference, organized by the Norwegian Barents Secretariat.

Indigenous politicians, representatives from industrial companies and authorities, as well as experts on indigenous peoples’ rights and international legislation are invited to share experiences and discuss the future of the North.

The participants will pay for the hotelroom individually on arrival, and the rate also covers meeting expenses.

Full pension at Thon Hotel per night:

Kirkenes is situated on the border to the Russian Federation, and the conference will be coordinated with the festival Barents Spektakel 2012, the Kirkenes Conference and the Barents Indigenous Peoples’ Congress, taking place on 10 February.
