Registration closed for conference!

Close to 100 participants have signed up for the events in Kirkenes, and the registration for the conference Indigenous Peoples, Business & Environment 2012 and the 2nd Barents Indigenous Peoples' congress is now closed.

James Anaya to conference in Kirkenes

Dr James Anaya, United Nations' Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, will open the conference Indigenous Peoples, Business & Environment 2012 with a key note speech on indigenous peoples rights and corporations.

Riddu Riđđu visits Taimyr

A delegation of artists from the Riddu Riđđu festival will take part in the Arctic Taimyr Festival in Dudinka on 8-12 December 2011, as a result after the Taimyr peoples visited the Riddu Riđđu festival last summer as Northern People of the Year.

Congress program

The program for the 2nd Barents Indigenous Peoples' Congress is ready. Discussion on the Action Plan for indigenous peoples 2013-2016 and follow-up on the resolution regarding representation in the formal Barents cooperation are key topics for the congress.

Finnish Minister on environmental priorities

Finland's Minister on Environment, Mr Ville Niinistö, emphasized the exclusion of environmental hot spots in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region and the work on protected areas in his speech as Finland took over the chairmanship in the Working Group on Environment at the Miniesterial meeting in Umeå on 9 November 2011. Three hot spots off the list

At a recent meeting in Umeå, Sweden, the Ministers of Environment of the Barents member countries could cross out three of a total of 42 official “hot spots” in the Barents Region. Anna D. Prakhova represented the Working Group of Indigenous Peoples at the meeting.

The Working Group of Indigenous Peoples in the BEAR will plan the upcoming Barents Indigenous Peoples' Congress 2012 at their meeting in Kirkenes, Norway, on 8 November.

The situation of indigenous peoples of the North was discussed at a seminar in St.
Petersburg on 12 October. The Ministry of Regional Development had invited scholars, experts and indigenous peoples' representatives from several areas to the seminar.
