“We need to learn how to listen to each other”, Sergei Kharyuchi, the Raipon president said today at the international conference “The Global Compact – Business and indigenous peoples”, which was held today at the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation. As he mentioned also the relationship of indigenous peoples and businesses today are particularly important and require urgent attention from both sides.
Every year the traditional Saami Autumn Games are arranged in Loparskaya village, the Kola district, by local Saami people and the Administration of the Kola District and the Murmansk Regional Sports Committee, in cooperation with the Murmansk Regional Centre for Indigenous Peoples.
On 8 September, the RAIPON first vice-president, Rodion Sulyandziga, met Mrs. Lene Espersen the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs. The meeting was organized during the official visit of Queen of Denmark Margarethe II with her family to Moscow.

A Sámi village will create 370 new jobs in Revda, as Murmansk Oblast has agreed with Lovozero Rayon and a private company on establishing a centre for tourism, based on Sámi traditions and culture. Local Sámi people know little about the plans.

KIRKENES: Following the development of an elected political body, representing the Saami people in Murmansk Oblast, the Working Group on Indigenous Peoples in the BEAR (WGIP) plans a mini seminar on democratization among indigenous peoples in Russia during the 10th session of the United Nations’ Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). Chair of the Saami Assembly of Murmansk Oblast, Valentina V. Sovkina (photo), is the keynote speaker, together with Anna Naykanchina from RAIPON.
