Indigenous peoples of the North discussed in St. Petersburg

The situation of indigenous peoples of the North was discussed at a seminar in St.
Petersburg on 12 October. The Ministry of Regional Development had invited scholars, experts and indigenous peoples' representatives from several areas to the seminar.

The seminar was held in St. Petersburg, 12 October , 2011 at the Institute of the North at Herzen University Inteunder the title "The reality of ethnic groups: the Northern Dimension."

 

The aim was to present a comprehensive analysis of contemporary social, cultural and economic status of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, the conditions for their sustainable development in the context of social transformation and modernization.

The conference brought together scholars, educators, experts, representatives of public organizations from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Khabarovsk Territory, Karelia, Khanty-Mansiysk, Yamal-Nenets, Kemerovo Oblast, Altai Krai, Yakutia and Taimyr, the NAO. 

At the conference, a plenary session was held on "Socio-economic and ethno-cultural development of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East at the present stage" and "Preservation and development of traditional culture and languages ​​of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East" .

The conference will be issued a special collection of articles based on papers and scientific reports of participants.

 

The event was held by the Ministry of Regional Development and organization RSPU, Herzen and the Research Institute of Arctic and sustainable development of indigenous peoples.
