Dr James Anaya is the key note speaker at the conference Indigenous Peoples, Business & Environment 2012. In 2008, Dr Anaya was appointed United Nations' Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and has since then reported on the situation of indigenous peoples worldwide.

In Kirkenes, on 9 February, Dr Anaya will focus on indigenous peoples' rights and international corporations.

Indigenous peoples from the entire Barents Euro-Arctic Region (BEAR) will attend the conference, which preceds the 2nd Barents Indigenous Peoples' Congress, gathering 50 Nenets, Saami and Veps delegates from Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden, and invited guests on 10 February.  

In 2010, Dr Anaya reported on the situation for indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation, after having visited several areas and met indigenous peoples and public officials in Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Beloyarsk, Khanty-Mansisk and Moscow.
